Welcome to the AWA Website

Archaeological sites exist in almost every town across Washington. They range from 10,000 year old Native American sites in Eastern Washington to Depression-era "Hoovervilles" near Seattle. Archaeologists use evidence from these sites to piece together the past. The goal is reconstruction of history, in order to understand human adaptation and learn lessons we can apply to the future.

Unfortunately, archaeological sites across Washington are disappearing at an alarming rate due to development, looting of artifacts, and natural erosion. Once the remains of the past are disturbed and taken out of context, information is lost. Preservation of intact sites is always our objective. However, if a site cannot be preserved, then it should be excavated only under the direction of professionally trained persons. This will ensure the information is available to all citizens of Washington State.
